They will return to Wellington to-morrow evening. llis Excellency the Governor Lord Islington and .-uile have signified their intention of witnessing the performance, of "The Arcadians" at the Opera House on Tuesday next, .July 11. A party Irom Government House will attend the second performance of "The Arcadians" at the Opera House on Friday next, July 7. To-dav the Aclimj-l'riinc Minister end iho ll:m. A. T. Xgata will he in Dunedin; the Hon. J. A. Millar, the Hon. 1). liiiddo, the Hon. G. lowlds, the Hon. R. M'JCenzie in Wellington; and tho Hon. T. Mackenzie in Taranaki.

Mr. W. F. Massey, Leader of the Opposition, left Hastings for .Napier yesterday morning, and will arrive in Wellington to-dav.

Br. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, -left Auckland for Sydney on Monday last. He will bo absent from the Dominion for a month.

Lanco-Sergeant Parkes (Grenadier Guards) and Scrgeant-Major "Wopdhead (West Yorkshire Regiment), who' havo been appointed staff instructors in the Xew Zealand Defence Forces, arrived by the Tongariro yesterday.

Mr. J. Godson, who has been appointed art instructor to the Auckland Technical School, arrived from England by tho Tongariro yesterday, 'and loft for Auckland by the Main Trunk express at neon.

Mr. P. Lovi, of the legal firm of Messrs. Wilford and Levi, who has been suffering from inflammation of tho lungs, is slowly recovering.

The Deputy-Mayor (Councillor J. Smith) told the City Council last evening that, the Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford) had decidedly improved in health. Tho speaker believed that if Mr. Wilford could bo persuaded to lie quietly and not think of the work of tho council ho would very soon get well.

Mr. F. Lawry, M.P. for Parnell, is in town.

Sir Charles Gordon, Bart., of Eavlston, Kirkcudbright, Scotland, died at (he ago of 7(i. Ho was resident in the colonies for the greater part of his life, having landed in Sydney at tho age of seventeen. He retired on pension from the Customs Service of New South Wales some vears ago, and has sinco lived a retired life at "Karlston," his Sydney home. His son, Sir Kobcrt, Gordon, is ako a resident of Australia.

Nireaha Tnmaki, chief of tho Maoris at Hamua, died yesterday at tho age of 75. Ho was of tho Eangitano tribe.— Press Association.

Sir. Lionel AValshe, stago director for Messrs. Clarke and Meynell, arrives in Wellington by the Maori this morning to institute preparations for his firm's production of "The Arcadians" to-morrow night.
