MASTERTON NOTES.
WATCHERS OF THE SABBATH. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, July 1. Four tenders were received tor the election of the Buchanan Home for Incurables at Greytown. At a meeting of a sub-committee ol the Wairarnpa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to-day, it was decided that, as the whole of the tenders exceeded the amount of the estimate (£12,000) the architects be conferred with on the subject. Much interest is being manifested in tho initial competitions in connection with tho Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society, which aro to be held, next week. Tho entries received total no fewer than 350. Mr. C. N. Baeyertz, of Wellington, will act as judge in the elocutionary divisions. The competitions will extend over three days, and will be concluded with a grand demonstration by tho prize-winners on the fourth evening. Mr. J. J. Doyle, guard on the local section of the railway, has-been transferred to the Morcer section, in the Auckland district. Mr. Doyle was last night entertained by his "ulway colleagues at a farewell "social" in the Foresters' Hall.
At a meeting of the Ministers' Association, held in Maslertou yesterday, it was decided to take steps to hold a "Citizens' Suuday" at some time prior to the municipal elections. The question of taking a "religious census" of the town, which was introduced by the Rev. A. T. Thompson, was held over till the next meeting. The Rev. A. Hodge introduced a discussion on the subject of Sabbath reform, in which he sought to show tho immediate need for a strenuous and holy fight against the encroachments upon the Sabbath. Mention was niado of the splendid work done in this connection by Sabbath Reform Societies in England and Canada. It was agreed that all the churches should endeavour to check the secularisation and industrialisation of the Sabbath.
At a meeting of the Parliamentary Debating Society last evening, an interesting debate took place on the taxation question, in which Messrs. J. C. Cooper, H. C. Robinson, E. Flanagan, S. R. Edwards, J. Cole. J. B. Rue, and J. Kitchener took part. The debate was eventually adjourned.
