AMERICA'S GALA DAY. The Fourth of July, as everybody knows, is America's great national gala day— the, anniversary of the proclamation" of her independence as a nation. AH over (lie States the day is celebrated as a day of thanksgiving, and, with annual casualties, aud fireworks displays. A genial echo of the great occasion was heard at the Grand Hotel last evening, when Mr. H. P. Baker, United States Vicc-Cousul for Australia, entertained representatives of the Now Zealand Consulates, the mercantile, community, the Government, and tho vice-royalty, at a Fourth of July dinner. Tho function was a most successful one, and described as one. of" tho.'most enjoyable gatherings ever, held in Wellington. Mr. Bakc-r's' guests numbered seventeen, the list being as follows:— Mr. Arthur Guise, Private Secretary to his Excellency the Governor; Mr. /.Tamos Mackintosh, Consul for France; Mr. E. Focke. Vice-Consiil for Germany; Mr. I?. T. Robertson, Consul for Italy; Mr. A'. Newton, Consul for Norway; Jfr. C. Harcourt Turner, United States Consul for New Zealand; Mr. T. U. Shah, Chinese Consul; Mr. T. Andrews, Secretary to the New Zealand Cabinet; the Rev. D. C. Bates, and Messrs. W. B. Montgomery (SecTetary for Customs), James Murdoch (General Manager, Bank of Australasia), V, T . Bennett and C." 'J. Lawrence (of Messrs. Dalgely and Co.. Ltd.), E. .1.
