MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M.) DID HE BOLT FROM THE CELLS? ALLEGED THEFT AND ASSAULT. George Pcarce, a tall heavily-built man, was charged (1) with stealing, on Juno 30, a'pair of boots valued at 4s. 11(1., the proporty of Thomas O'Brien; (2) villi stealing two alarum clocks valued at (is., the property of some person or persons unknown; and (.1) with assaulting Constable Gordon whilst the latter was in the execution of his duty. Accused stated that' he knew nothing of the charges of theft, but charged with assault, replied:. "Yes, in self-defence." It appeared that I'earce was locked up on Friday,. and it is alleged that, at 11.-15 p.m. on the same date, Constable Gordon, watch-house-keeper at Manners Street Station, went to give liiui blankets, and that, as soon ns the constable opened the door, accused assaulted him, and made his I'scapc. Subsequently Detective C'nssells and Constable Tail, rearrested accused at a house in Victoria Place. The police were not desirous of going on with (ho charges on Saturday morning, and Sub-Inspector Shcehan asked for a romand until (his morning. The magistrate granted the remand, and allowed bail in the sum of .ClO, and que surety of Jilt). ALLEGED DAMAGE TO WINDOWS.
