JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
' (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, June 30. Late on Wednesday, Messrs. Hatrick ami Company's river steamer Waione had a narrow escape from destruction by fire. Smoke was observed issuing from the cabin of the steamer which at tho time was hauled up on the slip far repairs. _ The fire was soon suppressed with practically no. damage. Investigation showed that it started in some loose straw packing in the bar, in the middle of the straw being a rat's nest, and adjacent to it an exploded box of matches, which the rats had evidently gnawed and ignited. The nautical inquiry concerning the stranding of the barquentine Peiotas was adjourned till Monday next. Concerning free school books, the Wanganui Education Board in its annual report says: "As the grant is not made in time to allow the books to be on hand at the beginning of the year, teachers are at their wits' end to know how to provide the pupils with reading matter. When tho books do come to hand, there are serious difficulties jd grouping to be faced, as the duration of the life of school books is limited, and tho question of reinstatement will presently be on the horizon."
