NO-LICENSE" MEETING.
(By Telegraph.-Special CorrcsnondenU • .""'..•'.' ■ Masterton, June'3o. there was a large gathering in the Town Hall to-night to celebrate the second anniversary of the closing of the liquor bars in Masterton. The chair was occupied by the Mayor, and the speakers were tho president of the No-Licen=e League (Mr. James Jl'Gregor) and tho Rev. Dawson, of Wellington. Tho organiser of the league (Mr. Jabez Bridge's) lead a lengthy report .concerning "the effect of'No-License on the trade and morals of the community. He stated that he had obtained written statements from pinery tradespeople in the'town,' and of' these only eight had declared themselves .in favour of Restoration. Letters were a ' so "ad. from six medical men, jhowing that they had not observed anv ill-effect; from home-drinking. The Mayers r'f Masterton and Eketahnna. testified that in their oninion .No-License had not,affected'trade, while they admitted that the morals of the community wer--' improved. The opinion of Sir Robert Stout was quoted, and figures were given- to show that the, bankruptcies had been reduced and.crime had diminished almost out of sight. Several speakers admitted that .quantities of Honor wore coming into the district, but emphasised tho fact that this did not renresen't more than one-third of the quantity which came to the district under license.
