MOTHER AND SON.
UNUSUAL CASE IN COUET. (By Tclcuraph—Press Association.) Auckland, June 30.' It is not usual to find a mother having her son arrested, but a respectable-look-ing young man named Thos. Wilson appeared to-day before Mr. Kettle, S.M., to answer to a charge of intending to leave New Zealand when a maintenance order was in force. Mr. Skelton' appeared for the defendant and explained that some time ago Wilson was brought before tho Court for an order for tho maintenance of his mother, and after hearing tho evidence, tho application was dismissed. When, some timo later, his mother took a similar action again, tho defendant foolishly thought that, as it had been dismissed before, ho need not attend, and the result was that tho order was made in default of his appearance. Thinking to better his condition, he was leaving for Svdnoy with his wife and child, when, ho was arrested on tho boat. The result was that his luggago had gone on and ho was left with his wife and child in Auckland. Mr. iSkclton said ho now formally applied for a cancellation of • the order as tho man only had £U 10s. in tho world, with which to try aiid get. over to Australia and look for work. Mr. Kettle said tho fault. was that the young man had not bidden his mother goodbye, and she, hearing that ho was leaving, took steps to stop him. Had ho explained the position to his mother, no doubt she would havo been willing for him to go. ~,,,, The mother said she objected to her son going and not' making some provision for her. She could not livo on her old age pension alone. Wilson explained that there were other children to help her. One son was earning £Z per week, and as ho was out of work, he thought he would try his luel; in Australia. His baby was only eight weeks old, and being stopped would leave him with very little to go on with when ho reached Sydney. M"r. Kettle said he had no doubt that, had the defendant attended the Court on tho second occasion and explained matters, the order' would not' have lieen made. He looked upon Wilson as an honest younj man, and his wifo and family had the tirst clnim upon him. Therefore tho order would bo cancelled.
