PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(Br Telegraph—Soecial CorresnondenU Palmerston, June 30. The monthly meeting of tho Chamber of Commerce was held last night,' Captain Haydon (president) in the chair. It was decided to join with tho Borough Council in advertising the' town and district in tho "Commercial and Shipping Gazette," £i being voted for. this purpose.' It was resolved to support, the Wellington Chamber of.' Commorco un.-its; action, in regard to having Wellington appointed a port of call for mail steamers between, tho Dominion and Australia, in preference,, to. Auckland.. Tho secretary .was instructed to inform the Palmerston Citizens' League that Mr. C. Louisson would be appointed to the first vacancy which occurred on tho couueilof this, chamber. Messrs. J. Wallace and T. R. Hodder wero appointed a committee to make inquiries as to the carriage of parcels by the railways to tho small stations in the district, and.Messrs. J. M. Johnston and M. A. Eliott wero appointed tho chamber's delegates to the annual meeting of the North Island Railway League. It was decided to again approach tho Postmaster-General on tho matter of putting the names of users on telephone accounts. Mr. C. C. Pago was elected a member of the chamber.
Mr. D. Bennett, of Awahuri, has been, appointed huntsman to the Manawatu Hunt for the remandcr of tho season, owing to the accident to Mr. J. Sweeney, who had a rib broken through his horse falling with him on Wednesday last.
Mounted Constable' M'Leod, who underwent an operation in tho local hospital some months ago for an internal complaint, returned yesterday iroin a visit to Rotorua, where ho has been recuperating.
The third round of the Friendly Societies' inter-lodge euchre tournament was played last night, with tho following results:—M.U. Oddfellows beat Orients by 37 to 35, and the Druids defeated the Foresters by 40 to 32. The Hibernians, who had a bye, entertained tho other lodges at supper.
A mock Imperial Conference was held at the weekly meeting of tho Palmerston Literary and Debating Society last night, when there was a good attendance of members. The discussion was mainly on a motion, "That no colony or dominion should be allowed to enter into any reciprocal agreement with any foreign Power without tho same being ratified by a supremo body representing the whole Empire." After a most interesting discussion, the motion was put and lost. At the next weekly meeting tho discussion will bo on the Parliamentary Veto Bill. On July 20 Mr. R. M'Nab will read a paper on "Tho American Whaling Invasion of 1830."
At tlio Uuion Timber Company's offices yesterday Mr. Percy , Torstonson, who is leaving tho company to go into farming pursuits, was presented by his fellow-em-ployees with a silver-mounted oak liqueur stand. The presentation was made by Mr. S. Fulbrook; who referred to the good feeling which had always existed between Mr. Torstonson and the rest of tho staff, on behalf of Whom he wished the guest the greatest success in his new path in life.
