There was a light shower early in the morning, but it cleared up, and largo crowds wended their way to Greeumeadows. Just after the first race, a shower camo down, aud it rained heavily nearly tho wholo afternoon. Some splendid racing was witnessed, and the handicopper (Mr. W. Coyle) can be said to have surpassed him self. 111 the Hack Steeples Wirral only beat Hoanga by a head, and, in the Stewards' Stakes, a sheet would have covered the first five horfes. There was another splendid finish iu the concluding event, when Perccler scored from tho Auckland mare Fuss by less than a head. Iu the steeplechases, the jumping witnessed was of a very high order. In the Napier Stceplcchaso El Dorado aud Xavier both .slipped into tho same fence, and did not rise at all, and Sardonyx acted similarly at thri first fcncu in tho Hack Steeples.

It is doubtful if El Dorado will over race again, as lus fetlock was put out, evidently by boing jumped oil from bohind.

Mallet was in char-go l when ho foil.in the Open Hurdle llace, and bad jumped splendidly up to this jioint. Probably ho would have won, as bo great stayer, and a good "mild horse.' Botlin was very soro after the Hack Hurdle Kaee, and will want.a spoil for a time. Captain Hell and Espartero were backed in that order for the Hack Hurdles. Tho former had charge over ■ Hie last haJf-niile, and won by n couple of length?- »'W er Scored a zlg-zaf? course in ibe straight, and tho top-weight went from the outside to the inside in an endeavour to pass "him. Bollin ran prominently for a mile, when be tired and dropped' back- Kildonun was in tlw van tho whole way» anil ihumkml clo>o' up fourth. The Manavatn pair, Boyno Water and Wuifestoue, finished a long wav behind the other horses. A peculiar feature of the raco was that tlio horses finished in the order m which they veto backed 011 the machine. The Auckland-owned noanga, who had been leading the Hack Steeples field a mprry danco when he vnu oft at Hastings was 'favourite in the similar event today He and "W'irral led off. with a mar break of the others, and rail locked together the whole way. At the second iciicc of the double llooupft osfliii pH* deavourcd to run oil, but was presented and, from this out', he jumped well, but not so well as Wirral, who, considering that the going was a bit heavy, gave a wonderful exhibition. Rosegrovc was fullv one hundred yards behind *110 leaders 'when tho field bad gone a mile, but he put in a wonderful run, and . had. a winning chance at the last fence, which lie struck heavily, aiul came down. Sardonyx slipped and came dov.'il at tlio first fencc. Castle Canter ran oil, aud Mafuta and Koliupatiki were pulled up. Captain Jingle and Wanstead finished well behind (lie first pair. The judges verdict was in iavour of \\ irral by a head only.

The open milo resulted in a very fine finish between six horses. 'l'he favourite was' Projectile, hut he got a very bud run and could only linish fifth, though ho was within a length and a half of the winner. At the start, Ariom made play from Projectile and Gold Circle. At tho end of a furlong, Sir l'risco, who was, handy, not cut out, and sent: back to last place. Down the bock. Kclorne ran up to Ariom, and led across the bottom, with Projectile and Gold Circle next. Cork, Separator, and Amalo coming in that order. Kc'.oruo fell <it tho turn, and Dicadless nearly come down over htm. In the straight Projectile tried to como on. but was sent on to the fence. Amato thou appeared oil the outside and, in n good finish, beat Gold Circle by a head. Ariom was a head further bock, .111(1 then tamo Separator, Projectile, and Cork iu that, order.

There was a wordy warfare between several of the riders after this race. Gray, oil Projectile, had his boot cut, through, and Olliver, on Ariom, had his trousers

torn. There was a deal of scrimmaging, but no inquiry, was held by the stewards, who evidently hold the opinion that the sticky going was responsible . for the affair.

The Napier 'Sleeplos gave Winiata. a chance to retrieve the laurels which ho lost at Hastings, and tho ex-hunter won after a most interesting race. At the start', Lingerer led tho held, all of whom jumped well till the bottom of tho course where El Darado fell.' Passing the stand Lull was next to Lingerer, iollowed by Mount Cook and Xavier. Mount Cook hit the . brush at the secoa furlongs -very hard, and 'was nearly down, and, at tho botton of tho course, he ran off. 1 The. next fence brought down Xavisf. Te Arai was in tho lead at the end of two miles, with Lull and Winiata next, and Lingerer tailed off. Down the back the last timo it looked any odds on To Arai, but his big weight wss beginning to'hamper him in the mud. At the sod tencc lie got close, and 'was nearly down, but Flynn made a wonderful recovery. Lull took the lead across tho bottom, but, entering the straight, he ran w,idc, and further on Winiata, cutting the cornfr, saved soveral lengths. Tho pair, were hard ridden, and jumped the hurdles' together. The whips were next brought out, and Winiata, finishing tho strongtr, won. by a couple of lengths. To Arai was fifteen lengths further back. El Dorado, was very lame after the race, and it was with'difficulty that he could be got home. ; The trouble appeared to be in the. hind fotlock, and tho black horso must have been jumped upon. Tho winner, hooked; several of his fences badly in the first round, but after'that ho jumped better; ■'

Great amusement was caused in the Ladies' Bracelet by-the antics of several of the- gentlemen riders, and .the crowd greeted their efforts with ironical cheering. I'earjv a hot. favourite, _ was in charge to the turn, whero To Whetu van alongside him, and. in the run home beat him pointless. Onslow Park was a poor third. Then came Morrio Lad.

The course was very heavy by the, timo that tho Open Hurdle Race came on, and Te Ru, who is a noted "mud performer," was heavily backed. He began smartly, but Mallet was always with him, and worried him till three furlongs from home, where Mallet fell. Windage, who had been handy, then ran up to Te Eu, and, jumping the last fence with him, ran home a comfortable wiriner by two lengths. Golden Water was third, twenty lengths back., Then came Merrie Lawn and Leolanter. Mallet put his shoulder out, and will. probably have to be destroyed.

A very . fine struggle was witnessed in the concluding event.. ' Gold Circle was the only withdrawal, and the big field of 19 horses'went to. the post. S. Reid, on Perceler, and W. Young. ,on Gold Battery, anticipated the 'barrier somewhat, and led. across the bottom by a couple of lengths' from Puss and G.oldemar, with the remainder badly strung out. Gold Battery and Goldemar were done with in the straight, where Fuss ..'tackled tho leader, and Ortygia, who had secured a lucky run on the fence, also carno through to tho-head of affairs. In a very fijio struggle Ortygia was tho first to quit, and Fuss, on the outside, appeared to hold the' winning hand, but Perceler stuck to his task, and in the last stride won by a nose. Fuss was a triflo unlucky as, in a scrimmage at the turn, ths beaten horses coming back interfered with' her.
