' It is reported that Sir William Whyte, second vice-president of the Canadian-Pa-cific Railway Company, who has just been knighted, may succeed Lord St'rathcona as Canadian High Commissioner in London, Lord Strathcona, who is now ninety-one years of age, has been High Commissioner for Canada sinco 1890. He was born in Scotland in 1820, and after some years of service with the Hudson's Bay Company, entered Canadian politics as a member of the Executive Council of the NorthWest Territory. He was one of the leading spirits in tho building of the Cana-dian-I'acific Kailway, and was. given a peerage in 1897. Sir William Whyto was born in Scotland in 1843, and emigrated to Canada at the age of twenty. Uo secured a billet with tho Grand Trunk Railway as a brakeman, and in the courso of twenty years worked his way up to the rank of division superintendent at Toronto. In 1881 he joined the Canadian-Pacific Railway as general superintendent of t'he important Ontario division, working his way up to his present position as assistant-1 vice-president in 1004. He lives at Winnipeg and has been prominently identified with local public affairs there. I
