EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETINU. The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was hold yesterday, (here being present: The chairman (Mr. Robert Lee), and Messrs. W. 11. Field, 11.P., J. Ivcbbell, J. G. W. Aitken, H. Elder, A. H. Vile, A. W. Hogg, M.P., \Ym. Allan, and W. C. Buchanan, M.P. The financial statement for tho past month ended .Tune 23 disclosed a debit balance of «£liß3 13s. lid.; the debit balance for the previous month was £1575 7s. lOd. SCHOOL GRANT. An intimation was received from the Government stating that a grant would bo provided for the reconstruction of tho Maunders Koad School, recently destroyed by fire. It was 'resolved, with reference to correspondence from the Government concerning unfavourablo replies to applications lor grants, to make further representations for grants for schools at Waterfalls and Rowlands. The board's application for a Government grant for additions to the teacher's residenco at Mangatainqka was declined. ~-No further action was decided upon. Grants for works and supplies were acknowledged _as follow Northland (fencing), ' Waingawa residence (new range), Carterton (refund cost of gas, and fencing), Mangaone "(now tank, repairs, etc.), Martinboroiigh (drn'nage for residence), South Wellington (various repairs and renewals), Mungaroa (refund of shelving for residence), Eastern. Ilutt (subsidy for blending paths), Marauui (grading), Coonoor (new .piping for stove, residence), Fernridgo (new range equipment, residence), Newtown Infant Department (teacher's room), Pahiatua (metalling), and motor bicycle shed. _ Tho clerk of works and inspector were instructed to report upon applications for grants for shelter sheds at Mitchelltown and South, Wellington; applications for grants for Ihuroa (bridge), South Wellington (dado), and Lansdowne (fencing) were referred to the clerk of works for report.

Xhe inspectors wcro instructed to report upon applications for increased accommodation at Clareville and Ivnhautara. Applications from Epuni (water-course and metalling), and Whakataki (residence), were deferred. Library subsidies for the Normal School (.£5), Island Bay (<£4 17s. 9d.), and Ihurua (additional lUs.), wero approved.' VARIOUS MATTERS.. The foUowing resignations were accepted:—Miss L. Smith, Te Ore Ore; Miss A. Caverhill, Waihilri Valley; Miss I. Stace, Putara; Miss I''. Livingstone, Levin; Miss F. Stevens, Levin. The thanks of the board were accorded to the Masterton C'-ounty Council for the use of the reserve at Taueru. 'The Health Department reported that' it could not recommend a septic tank for KopuaraDga. The board decided to act accordingly, and acquaint the committee with its decision. It was resolved that upon the completion of the new infant department at the Hutt District High School, the alterations previously considered by the board with regard to the main school building, should bo proceeded witb. An application lor the establishment of classes of instruction in cookery at Jolmsonville was received. It was stated that upon the completion of the now school building and outbuildings as a separate department -in the new site —two rooms and a master's room—the old building would be set apart for classes in cookery. It was resolved to acquaint the Jolmsoiiyille Committee accordingly. - TENDERS AND SITES., * Tenders for school'wofks'wcre acceptcd as follows:—Norinaiidale (new school), W. Harwood; Worser Bay (additions), Wagstaff and Sons; Kaiwaiwai (repairs), W. Benton and Son; Brooklyn (metalling); P. Lamberg. .... - It was resolved, with regard to school sites at Martinborough, Johnsonville, and Waihoanga, as followsMartinl>bro\igli: That the additional rent claimed be declined. Johnsonville: That tho : plan of the proposed sub-division be approved; that Sections 4. and 5 be reserved; .and that the sale bo held oyer in tho. mean-'-time, but that. any offer be considered.
