MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Enecial CorresDondent.) Masterton, June 27. Tho Tararua Ranges are at present covered with a mantle of snow. The estimated loss by Sre in Masterton last year was <£1482, of which <£037 was for buildings, and 0:845 on their contents. At the No-License anniversary demonstration on Friday evening next, an opportunity is to be afforded opponents of No-License to state their case, and ask questions.' Tho quarterly meeting of the Masterton Oddfellows Lodgo was held last evening, Bro. P. Smith, N.G., presiding over a large attendance. Bro. Smith was presented -with, tho gold medal donated by tho Wellington district. Officers for. the "ensuing . year- wcro elected ; .as* .follow:— N.G.,.LSro; :.A. .M'Lood; V.G., Bro. F. 1 Mr. G; P. Moore, of ■ Kai -Iwi, has donated to the Masterton A. and P. Association a. handsome rose 'bowl for most ■points in fat cattle. It ; will be remember|"cd that Mr, Moore won "the well-known I "Manawa bowl"- for the same-class; and. he has now 'made tho'donation-to -replace this trophy. The, annual, meeting of, the. Masterton Pire Board -was held on Monday. Mr. Pragnell. was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. An offer from Mr. "W. J. I Jones (electric fire alarm system) at Is. Gd. per charge, was accepted. Mr. J. P. Prentico reported that a new feed-houso and workshop, etc., had been completed at a cost of .£53.175. Gd. .Captain Dixon reported\that, ;.(luring the year, the fire police (besides attending fires)..had put in 234-attendances at the Town Hall, and 341 at the Foresters' Hall. Tho average attendance ;it fires was eleven out of sixteen. Tho superintendent of the firo brigade submitted a lengthy report, which' was adopted. A number of small matters arising' out of the report were, left in tho hands of. the local members tho ringing of the alarm bell. The total expenditure for the ensuing year ,was estimated at- ,£1023 195., from which'the Government contribution of £50 is deducted, leaving .£973 ]95., one-half of which is payable by the Masterton Borough Council, and the other half by the insurance companies. The total premium income received by tho insurance companies last year amounted to .£5.11!) 18s. 7d., being .£l2B. lis. Gd. less than : for the previous' year.
