GOVERNMENT SHIPPING OFFICE.

» IS IT BIG ENOUGH? For some time it has been fairly evident, that the Government shipping office at Wellington is too small to meet tho business at this port. Often the public part of the office is so crowded that the officials are very much hampered in doing their work. This part of the office measures about 18ft. x 9ft., and, on Saturday last, a sort of climax was reached when over 100 men were in the office at. one time. The crew of R.M.S. Maitai were- being paid off, and various other ship's articles had to bo attended t'o. Ther/fis a counter running the length of the office about 3ft. wide, and one solitary desk on which tho books are to bo kept. When a: crowd of men, such as were in tho office on Saturday, have to be signed on and olf, all is temporary confusion. Tho man who happens to bo at the back of the crowd and who has to get to the counter to sign the articles, has to hustle his way through his mates, and then, when ho does get the pen in his hand, he is continually being bumped by the surging crowd behind him.
