Eobert Donald, n trimmer on the steam, cr JSavua, pleaded not guilty to a charro of having assaulted John ' Stitt, second engineer of the vessel, on the high seaa between Auckland and Wellington on Juno 21. Ihe evidence was held to bo against accused,, and ho was fined dOs„ with the option of seven days' imprisonment. Mr.-P. J. O'Ecgan appeared for the defence. For assaulting a railway porter, named Alexander Gnlbraith, on tho Lnmbton SlaHon 'on Thursday last, a voung man, named John Keane, described as a fireman, was fined 205., and ordered to pay witnesses' expenses Bs., in default seven (lays' imprisonment. For using improper language, tho same accused was fined £i, the alternative being H days' imprisonment. Joseph M'Farlano, appearing on remand on a charge of failing to provide adequate maintenance for his wife at Motuoka, was further remanded until July 1. Hail was allowed in the same sum as previously. Mr. E, K. Kirkcnldio appeared for accused. John David Speight was remanded until Wednesday next on two charges of theft of overcoats from hotels in the city. On a charge of drunkenness, Richard Hamilton was fined 205., with the alternntivo of seven days' imprisonment. Isidoro Jacobs for a similar offence was fined 10s., in default t8 hours' imprisonment. A iirst-ollcnding inebriate was fined 55., with tho usual alternative.
