TO-DAY'S DINNER.
(Specially written for The Dominion.) THUHSDAY. Milk Soup. Boast Shoulder o£ Mutton. Onion Sauce. Baked Potatoes. French Beans. Chocolate Pudding. MILK SOUP. Two young turnips, i young onions, 6 potatoes, 1 tablespoonful of butter, 1 breakfastcupful of milk, 2 quarts of water, 2 tablespoonfuls of flour, a little finely chopped parsley, pepper and salt. Prepare tho .vegetables, cutting them into small pieces. Put them into a souppot, and let. them boil for an hour in eight breakfastcups of water. Then rub through a sieve, and return to the pot. Mix the flour with the milk, and smoothly add it to the soup, and stir until it boils. Add pepper and salt to taste, and parsley. FOE TO-MORROW. Half-pint Lentils (soaked over-night). Stock. Hapuka. 2 Dozen Oysters. Dry Cheese.
SOCIAL AND PERSONAL A Poster Ball. A meeting of members of the Society for the Health of Women and Children was held in one of tho committee rooms of the Toiva Hall yesterday afternoon. The proposal for a ball to be held in aid 'of the funds of the society was fully discussed, Dr. Platts-Jlills presiding. Apologies for their absence were received from Dr. Collins, wlu expressed his sympathy with tho project, Mrs. Fonsonby, Mrs. Darling, Mrs. W. J. Grey, Mrs. Tripe, Mrs. lilgar, Jlrs. Lan Duncan, Dr. and Mrs. Whyto, Mrs. Neil Galbraith, and Mrs. Coull. all of them at tho same time stating their intention of helping in any way they could. It was decided that a "poster ball" should be held in the Town Hall on I'riday, July li, and that it should be, as well, a plain and fancy dross ball. The, different business firms are to be asked to co-operate by sending a representative to advertise, them by their poster dre.«, an entrance fee being charged Tho grand march of the posters, wit'i which the ball is planned to open, should be a most interesting sight to witness. The various sub-com-mittees, decorative, advertising and printing, supper, etc.. have not yet been fully formed, owing to some of the_ members being absent. Mrs. Algar Williams was appointed honorary secretary, and Mrs. F. Leckio honorary treasurer.' There are few people who now do not know of the invaluable work done by the society in regard to the health of the babies of the city, a work that is deserving of every support and consideration, and the ball, which takes place next month, gives mest people an opportunity of assisting it in a greater or less degree. .. . A Pastry Competition, Tho pastry competition, which was held in the industrial, section of the Exhibition yesterday, resulted in Miss Carter, with 71 varieties of pastry, winning the first prize, and Miss W. Sims the second. Miss Ncllio Bassett and Miss Lena Findlay were both highly commended. In this competition, all those who entered for it had to make as many varieties of pastry out of two cups of flour and half a pound of butter as possible, and Miss Carter's exhibits were ,a revelation of what could bo done. Size, of course, was not looked for. Mrs. James Godbcr was the judge. The' task of making arrangements for tho entertaining of tho many members of flie'Sheffield Choir'litis been a somewhat difficult one. Dr. Harriss is a guest at Government House; Lady Nora Noel and her brother. Viscount Camden, have taken rooms at the Grand Hotel. One hundred and ten are being entertained by private people. Mrs. i Algar Williams, secretary of the Hospitality Committee of the Victoria League, and Mr. W. D. Gorham, the local secretary, havo had much to think of in tho way of.making provision for tho safe arrival of guest and luggage to the apportioned host and hostess. A gardwi party at Government House is to be given on Saturday week, on which night the Choir leaves for the south after the concert. i
