HUNDRED YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP OF ENGLAND. By Telearaph—Press Asaociation-Oopyrlehl London, June , 19. 'The hundred yards championship of England was run at Leicester, and resulted;- ; Hardwicke, 58 3-ssec 1 Darbyshire, 59 4-ssec. 2 Itadmilovic, 60sec ■ .3 HOW TREIYIBATH BEAT POSTLE. 'Writing to the "Referee-" in reference to the race for the world's quarter-mile championship, L. C M'Lachlan said:Owiiig to our inability to secure a suitable date upon which to bring the event off in Brisbane, wo decided at the ast moment to change to Rockhampton during Carniv.il Week, and the race took placo on Juno 3, before a fair attendance, especially as thp ground is situated a considerable distanco out of Rockhampton, with but a half-hour one-car service. Tho attendance was quito up ro expectations, and with the above disadvantages to contend against, only tho real enthusiasts attended. Trembath won somewhat easily at the finish, and, considering the circumstances and the nature of the track, the time (50 l-ssec.) was exceptionally fost. Ihe pace was not run to suit the New Zealander. Arthur Postle is too good a general for that; he ran a very "heady race, and only hij apparent lack of condition and finish prevented him from being close up at the tape. Owing to tho public rushing the ground, considerable time was waited in getting the track clear. Postlc won the toss and chose inside running. Mr.' Harry Harris, of Botany fame, acted as starter, and lost no time in getting them away. Postlo slipped out just fast enough to lead to- the nr?t bend, and then slowed up, with the intention of making Trembath run i.ver ground if he wautcd tbe pace fast. Before entering the back straight, Trembath bounded out in front and raced for the r.ext bond; but Postle again managed to secure inside running, and adopted the same tactics as at the previous bend Trembith, before reaching the straight, raced out, and after a keen struggle for about 50 yards, Postle succumbed and Trembath trotted in.
