BOXING.
: * — A CARNIVAL AT HASTINGS. AND WHAT BEFELL LECKIE. , (By TclcEraph-Press Association.! Napier, Juno 20. Tho Hawkc's Bay Amateur Boxing A* sociation held a very successful carnival in tho Princess Theatre at Hastings to!pigh't.,.Therb,was n, largo'attendance, and , soine! l first-class sport was witnessed, boxing patrons going away. thoroughly 6atis,fied with tho uight's' entertainment, The contest between .Leckic, of Wellington,. .and Ireland, Of" Waipawa, was. a particularly good one; and was cleanly fought-from start'to finish. Ireland, tho winner, is a very promising boxer, who should place many victories to his credit in the- future. "Lou" O'Halloran, of Waipawa, was to have met "Gnat" Williams, but tho latter was unablo to ob-. tain a doctor's certificate as to fitness, and at tho last moment his place was taken by W. Rogers, of Wellington. The latter put up a good contest, but was out-matched by tho Hawko's Bay representative. Mr. A. Gregory was referee. The proceedings opened with a tame amateur bout; in which J. M'Cprmick defeated J. Ellingham. ; Lcckio Conquered in Five. The next event was a contest for a purse of .£3O, between A. B. Ireland' (Waipawa),' list. 41b., and A. Lcckie, 10st. 81b. In tho first round Ireland quickly corrected any impression that he was ouo of the raw type, deficient in ring craft. While depending chiefly on"bullocky" tactics, ho possesses excellent defence, and kept off tho Wellington man's nltack very cleverly. There, was little to choose ■ between tho pair in the first, round. Leck'io put in soino fast work; ■ but Ireland kept honours even with some, thumping blows. In tho. second round the Waipawa man forced the fighting, aud a damaging one on tho chin made tho gong sound very pleasant to Leckie. In the third round Ireland eased off, and Leckio came at him, but the local boxed kept out of dapger, and retaliated with two hard blows to the face, Tho fourth round found Ireland distinctly the master. One on tho chin, followed up smartly by a left, sent Leckio clinging to the ropes. The fifth round found the Wcllinglonian on the floor ■ more than once, and though he just survived the round, at its expiration his seconds wisolv threw in the towel. "Tho second half was opened with an amateur contest between F. W. Kerr (Bst. 81b., of To Horo) and "Bert" 'f'reweck; (Bst. lOlb., of I'almerston North). The contest was one of six rounds, , and each, was full of interest. Kerr eventually won a particularly close contest by ' scoring heavily in the last round. Rogers (Wellington) Counted Out. The final event was between "Lou" O'Halloran (Wnipawa, 9st. 71b.) and W. Rogers (Wellington, Ost. 81b.), for a pnr.se of .£3O. In the first two rounds nothing of importance happened, but it presently became evident, that O'Halloran was much quicker than his opponent. All his leads, however, were met by ducking on Rogers s part, and clinching formed a large part of the bout. In the fourth round Rogers appeared to tire, and persistently, hung to his opponent. Tho fifth was an even round, Rogers gettingin a few good How,, but; in tho sixth round, the Jelling' lonian was sent to tho floor, awl the gon* gave him a welcome respite. Ihe seventh round proved tho last. Rogers pleased hU supporters by landing a hard one on hs opponent, but O'Halloran ™t a l.aM - with a vigorous rally, and' sent he WeU lingtonian to the.floor badly rattled. Tins vns virtually the end, for. although lw. ro*o at <i\" O'Halloran again attacked vigorously, and a sharp rally ended with Kogcrs being counted out.
