' Tho Maslerton Chamber of Commerco is making energetic efforts to create public interest in the petition, asking for tho deviation of tue railway line to Wellington, so as to avoid tho Uimutnlta incline. A Iwoklet pivinp; information is being circulated. There aro throe routes suggested, two coming from Kailoke to Woociside, and one from Petono to Pigeon Bush, via Wainui-o-mata. Tho last-named is favoured by residents, of Featherslon and district, as the others would necessitate Fcathcrslon being served by a branch line. A public meeting will be called here ut an early dalo to discuss the proposals. An epidemic of measles has appeared here, and many families ha'vo all their • children alYccie'd. Tho decision of the Government <o limit the subsidy for Coronation'inemor- ■ ials to £)T> in the case- of town district*, while boroughs will be RirCu up to i'2so, has caused considerable disappointment here. 'I'hore ore boroughs not much larger than Fcatherston (which is a town district), which are thus entitled to receive up to .£250 subsidy, on amounts expended for certain memorials. It is anticipated that, with llio proceeds from tho various functions to bo held hero on Coronation Day, the swimming baths fund will reach about JM2O, aiid it ie intended to build smaller baths than at first proposed. A sacred concert was given by the Anglican Church choir here on Suudaj night. There was a good attendance. FEILDING. Lists for tho enrolment of territorial in connection with the compulsory 'training scheiiie finally closed on Saturday. Sergeant-Mnjor Morrison, tho area officer in chargo of the Foilding district, has enrolled 797 names. Of those ill aro of youths between tho ages of- 14 and 18 years, and 356 between tho ■ ages of 18 and 21. Included in the total aro 182. who have, horses, but 78 of them aro too young to be in a mounted i company. There aro SO enrolled already in volunteer corps, leaving 747 who will be requited by law to learn how to defend their country. Tho marshals (Captain Barltrop and Councillor J. G. Harford) have prepared the following order of the procession for the Coronation celebrations in Feilding:— Salvation Army Band, Oddfellows, Foresters, Druids, Fire Brigade, ministers of religion, local authorities, the Mayor nnd M.P., Feilding Band, cadets, veterans, volunteers, mounted rifles, cyolists," and general public. It was stated at the Kiwilea County Council meeting that there was a differopen of some .£22,000 between tho valuation of the county by tho Government Valuer, from which the rates were struck, and the amount of the valuation wmt in by tho Palmcrston Hospital Board, from which the hospital levy is arrived at. It was decided to communicate with the Valuation Department, asking why this increased valuation had been given to the Hospital Board. A Sunday School Workers' Association for Feilding and district was formed on Monday night at tho instance of tho Methodist Sunday School. A proposed feature of the association is training m blackboard work by means of technical classes to be conducted by Mr. L. Watkins (of the Technical School) if it can be so arranged. Tho master butchers of Feilding had decided to keep their premises open on Coronation Day nnd close on the Prince, of Wales's birthday. That difficulty, however, has been overcome,. the Labour Department having assured the butchers that, by closing on Wednesday afternoon, they can open on Friday, and close on Coronation Day. OTAKI.
