——* (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, June 19. A meeting of those interested in the extension of the telephone seivice through the Wangaehu and Iliurana Valleys is to tie held in Masterton to-morrow. His Excellency the Governor, who is patron of the Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society, has been invited to be present at the opening of the festival next month. Complete arrangements have been made for the hospital ball and children's danco which is to bo held here on July G and 7. The proceeds of the function aro to be devoted to the purchase of X-rays for the local institution. Tho golf match between Masterton and Pahiatua, played on tho Lansdowne links on Saturday last, resulted in a win for the home train by five matches to one. The following were tho scores (Masterton players being mentioned first in each ease)A. 13. Lawrence beat J. C. Swainson, 2 up, 1 to play; E. D. Waddington beat J. Osborn Lilly, 5 up. 3 to play; F. 11. Elwatc Ijeat 11. M'Sherry, 4- up, 3 to play; C. Perry beat G. 11. Smith, 5 up, 1 to play; A. R. Sclanders lost to H. Marshall, 1 down; M. Foley beat G. H. R. lilrieh, 1 up. Hares aro reported to be fairly numerous in the Masterton district this year. A party which went out yesterday bagged five within a short distance of the town. At the "meet" in connection with tho Wairarapa Hunt at Blairlogie on Saturday'last, tho "drag" was laid by Mr. C. F. Vallance (master) oil Orey Dawn, and Miss Zona Vallanco on liita. Sir. Jas. Smith (huntsman) rode Rata, Mr. F. B. Yallance. (lion. whip) was on Grit, Miss K. Morrison on Crazy Jack, J. O'Brien on Wildfire, R. Morrison on llaupare, Dr. M'Crac on Spanner, L. Corbett on Weary Bill, T. liitchio on Rimu, 11. jil'lsoacs on-Aohanga, T. Timms oil Dick Turpin, J. 1). Jimmicson on All Black, J. Floyd oil Renault, E. Southcy on Polite, and J. Keigh on Nellie. Butter is being retailed in Masterton at Is. 2d. per pound, and there is some talk of the price being increased. At a meeting of the General Committee of tho Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society held on Saturday night a committee consisting of Messrs. H. C. Robinson, A. Donald, and 11. D. Heberton was appointed to canvass the (own for trophies. Thirty-four new. members were elected at a meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society on Saturday last. The society lias iiow a membership of 275, and is o'no of the strongest institutions of its kind in the Dominion.
