At an early hour this morning tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion steamer lonic left Wellington for Loudon, via Monte Video, Rio dc Janeiro, Tcneriffs, and Plymouth. She is due at the Home port on July 28. KENT LEAVES. LAS PALM AS. The local agents of the F.-H.-S. Lino have received information that tho Kent, which left Lyttelton for Avonmouth direct on May 30, continued her journey from Las P.ilmas on Juno 15. She is duo at her destination on June 23. TO LOAD AT WESTPORT. It has transpired that the charter to load a, cargo of coal at Westport arranged for the Norwegian barque Johanne has been cancelled. This is due to some repair work taking longer to complete than at first anticipated. Tho engagement will now bo taken up by the German barque Vidylia, which, upon arrival at Albany— where she is now bound—will be ordered to proceed to the Now Zealand port and load for the Carolines. THE COASTAL SURVEY. The Terra Nova, which has been chartered by the Government to survey a portion of the New Zealand coast, will commence operations early next month. The vicinity of tho Three Kings Islands will receive the first attention of the survey chip, and it is probable the whole of the three months for which she has been engaged will be spent there. About ECO square miles will bo covered. A NEW CLAN LINER LAUNCHED. The steamer Clan Maephec, built by Irvine's Shipbuilding and Dry Docks Company. West, Hartlonool, was launched on April 29. She ha.s been built to the order of the Clan Line. Ltd., Glasgow, and is of the following dimensions:—Length, 450 ft.; breadth, 53ft. 6in.; and depth, 37ft. She is expected to steam about 12 knots. These steamers are becoming very well known in New Zealand waters, trading, as they do from Bunbury to hero with jarrah timber, and then loading un villi general cargo for tho United Kingdom or Continent. The firm of G. n. Scales, Wellington, arranges th? charters of these steamers to thi3 side of tho world. REPAIRS-POET CHALMERS BOOMED. Says a southern paper:—The repairing of the oxtensivo damage sustained by tho Knight of the Garter in entering Bluff Harbour is of special interest for two reasons. First, it- is the largest shiprepairing job ever douo south of the Line, and, second, the workmanship done at Port Chalmsvs is such that the repairs, it in said by people who understand the nature of the work, would be a credit to any shipbuilding firm in Europe. Never, probably, in the history of shipping did a vessel leave port ill such a state of utter unseaworthiness as did the Knight of the Garter, when ;hc left the Bluff. She had SKO tons of ca.'go on board, and when she arrived here and was docked for the fighting of her iniurics it was found that tho leakage, which had found its way insido and proved beyond the pump}' capacity of ejection, was snuirting out through tho holes in the vessel's bottom as from a shower bath. About, half of the stern frame was missing, and tho rudder was hanging by a single pintle. The ship was practically a wreck below the waterline. The contract price for the repairs was £13,0C0. The work was to be completed in eight weeks. The bottom of the •hip had to be taken to pieces as the first step to the repairs. It was found that sixty plates had to be removed from the outside of the vessel's bottom, and as each of these plates weighed from two and a half to threo tons the nature of the undertaking can bo surmised.' The vorscl had, in fact, to bo made as good as new, and that ha,= been accomplished well within contract time, and to the satisfaction of the Government's and Lloyd's surveyors.

The Enncrdale, of the Maoriland Steamship Co.. has brought 3C0.K0 feet of timber to Dunedin. There is also a quantity on ; board for Oamaru. It is probable that the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Wakanui will go to Australia, to load for Homo, after she haj completed discharge of her Canadian cargo at Dunedin. About. Tuesday next the Tyser liner Star of Scotland is. expected to clear Wellington for Brisbane. The wet weather yesterday impeded her discharge somewhat. Mr. Davidson, late of the TaUapuna, has joined the Mararoa as third engineer, and Mr. W. H. M'Brido, of Frailkton. Otago. After ft 43 hours' trip from Wellington, the F.-H.-S. steamer Morayshire arrived at Timaru yesterday. She encountered the same weather as the Maori on the run down. To-d.iv she leaves Timaru for Lyttelton, and the latter port for Avonmouth direct on June 21. Poherua. 5.5., managed to negotiate tho fireymcuth bar yosterday. She is bound for Wellington. At 11 a.m. yesterday the Manonrika left Westport for Nelson and Wellington. She leaves Nelson for here nt 7 a.m. to-day, and should arrive in port about 5 o'clock this evening. On this trip tho vessel will bo laid up for annual overhaul, and will bo relieved by tho TaUapuna. At 13 p.m. yesterday the Flora was to have left Dunedin for Wellington, via Tirer.vu. She is due in port on Sunday, and IcaTds again for Westport and Greymouth at noon on Monday. On June 22, or thereabouts, tho New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer otaki is expected to arrive at Wellington from Port Chalmers for Homeward loading. From here shs proceeds to Picion. Bound for northern ports and London, the Nsw Zealand Shipping Company'.! steamer Pnpnroa, is to leave Wellington e.t 4 p.m. to-day. Tur.iluna. 8.M.5., is duo hack at Wellington from the south on June 25. She finishes losdintr at this port, and sails for London, via, the usual ports, on Juno 29. By tho steamer Hnrpagus. which left Port Piric on June 6 for Antwerp, what is claimed to be tho largest rhipmont of c.oueeatw.tes yet dispatched from any port in South Australia, in one bottom, went forward. It totalled 8695 tons, and exceeded that by tho Willesden—one of tho Watts. Watts licet—some time ago by well over ICOO tons. The vessel was recently at Wellington with general cargo from Now York. A Press Association messago from Auckland states that tho steamer Frankdalc. bound from Valparaiso to Newcastle, put in to the northern port for bunkers.
