MASTERTON NOTES

(From Our Special Corrcsioildcnt.l Masterton, Juno If!; At a meeting of the Wnirarapa Employers' Association, held this morning, it was resolved that the liusines.s places of Masterton duse on Thursday next, Coronation Day. The association decided to advise the Drivers' Union to observe Thursday instead of Friday next as a holiday. Mr. W. C. liuchauan, 51. F., addressed a meeting of electors at liideford last night, and was well received. Tho chair was occcupiod by Jlr. Carswcll. Mr. W. 11. L. Galwey, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at 'Masterton, who has been transferred to Napier, will be greatly missed in sporting and r.tliletic circles. Mr. Galwey was for some years a member of the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. He was also a prominent member of the Masterton Cricket Club, and one of the founders oi the Masterton Golf Club.

Kt a meeting of the Coronation Celebration Committee last night, final arrangements were made for Thursday next.- A feature of the day will be a procession of Territorials, Friendly Societies, fire brigades, and citizens.

Mr. W. Minoguc, of the Palmerston North Post Office, has been transferred to Masterton.

A man named Hockley sustained a painful accident at the Waingawa freezing works yesterday. His hand by some means came in contact with machinery, and two of his fingers were amputated. Tho injuries were dressed by Dr. Cook.

The weekly meeting of the Endeavour Lodge of Good Templars was held last night, Bro. C. Anderson, C.T., being in the chair. One new member was proposed, and after the transaction of the routine business the lodge was thrown open to members and their friends. A pleasant evening was spent. A Well-attended meeting of the General Committee of tho Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society was held last evening, Dr. Cook-presiding. It was announced that over 250 entries had already been received for tho competitions to bo held next month. A subcommittee was appointed to arrange the order of the programme. It was decided that the charge for admission to the competitions be 2s. and Is. in the evenings, and half that amount in the afternoon.

The first annual "at liomo" in connection with the Masterton branch of the Y.M.C.A. was held last evening in tlio Gymnasium Hall, when there was a very large gathering of members and friends. An attractive programme of gymnastic exercises, etc., was presented. An effort is to be made to induce tlio Physical Culture Association to allot next year's championships to Masiterion. Mr. Edward T. Lees, instructor in tho wool-classing classes, which havo becomo exceedingly popular in the country districts, will start a class at Waikaraka on June 21.

Tho result of the field competitions held in connection with the Masterton A. and P. Association has been made available. There were six entries, and Mr. AValter Cameron proved the winner of the silver cup presented by Messrs. Sutton and Son for the best crop of swedes, flat or ridged. Messrs. G. Shaw and K. J. Dagg acted as judges.

At the second shoot of tho "leg-in" series in connection with tho Masterton Morris-tubo Club, lield last evening, Mr. C. Hopkins was successful in the "A" Class, and Mr. J. Daniel! in the "B."

The following team has been selected to represent tho Masterton Golf Club in a match with the Pahitua Club on the T.ansdowne links to-morrow: —Messrs. A. B. Lawrence. E. B. Waddin»ton, F. H. Choale, C. Perrv. A. R. Sehnders, M. Folev, G. C. Aitken, and N. H. James.
