PROHIBITION IN MAINE.
CONFLICTING EEPOETS. : A correspondent writes as follows to tho "Otago Daily Times" :— Tho "Inangahua Times" of April 5 last, in its report of a meeting addressed by Mr. T. E. Taylor, has the following:— "Afr. Taylor then said he had cabled over to tho Governor of Maine and asked if tho liquor statement that prohibition .was- marked by drunkenness, destitution, and poverty is true., and he rfcad out a cablegram from the Governor, Air. T. Cobb, stating that it was nothing of th& sort, and absolutely denying the chargo against Maine. "Air. Thomson: What does tho Governor say now? "Mr. Taylor-. It does not matter what he says now. It is what-ho cabled, then. That was just before the election." Prom the Portland (Maine) "Argus" is taken the following:— "Here is the conclusion of ex-Governor Cobb, as tho summing-up of his experience with prohibition as a working system and not a mere theory in prohibition's homo State:— "'lf I, for the social, economic, and moral benefit of the rising generation of tho State of Maine, were to chooso between tho enforcement of prohibition as I have been able to enforce it with my best efforts (and never any man put forth such efforts), if I were to choose between prohibition as I have been able to enforce it and selling rum as freely as sugar over tho counter of my store, I would unhesitatingly declare for free rum.'"
