ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
• « A SHOCKING OCCURRENCE. (By I'cleEraph.-SDccial Correspondent.! Masterton, Juuo IG. A. shocking fatality occurred at Mount Bruce, a few miles from Mustorton, about noon to-day. A boy, named Sydney Bertram Jobansen, ]2 years of age, and a son of Mr. John I'. Johansen, was out gathering bones with his brother. He was crossing a cliff near the Ruamahmiga River, when the. branch of the tree on which he was depending broke, and ho was precipitated 100 ft. The. body was recovered in tho rivor in about Sfl. of water, and about one hundred yards from the seeno of the accident, at four o'clock this afternoon. An inquest wjll probably bo held to-morrow. A CHILD'S SHOCKING DEATH. (By TelccrapU.-Prcsa Association.! Gisbornc, June IG. A shocking fatal accident occurred this evening at the Tokaraka railway station, by which a little girl, Norma Phillips, aged 3\ years, mot an untimely fate. Tho girl, with her mother, boarded tho train at Tckaraka with the object of going further out. in the country toward tho line terminus. Just prior to tho train moving off, Mrs. Phillips rushed out of the carriage and on to tho platform to recover a parcel which she had forgotten. The littlo daughter followed her mother, and just reached the outer platform of tho carriage when tho train commenced to move. Tho unfortunate child'was thrown out on to tho permanent-way on tho outside of tho train, and the wheels passed over her neck. Tho accident was not seen by anybody (as the train was between the si>ectators and the unfortunate victim) but tho child's mother, who was frantic with grief. Tho child's father recently drew a Government section at Otoko, and the family were about to make it their home. FATAL ..DESCENT OF COAL. Greymouth, June IG. Thomas Old, aged 40, was killed by a fall of coal at tho Blackball mino yesterday. His mate had a narrow escape, a prop falling immediately over where ho was entombed. COAL WORKER STRUCK DOWN. Christchurch, June IG. William Brewer, aged 35, a lumper en the whary.es, was killed whilo working coal on the steamer Ngatoro at LyHelton this morning. A big lump of coal was knocked out of a basket, and struck Brewer on the head, fracturing his skull.
