THE WHALING INDUSTRY.
NORWEGIAN FIRM TO OPERATE, Having made very comprehensive inquiries into the possibilities of tho whaling industry in these waters, Captain L. S. Hasle, representing Messrs. <_'. Neilsen and Co., of Larvik,. Norway, after consulting his principals has decided that there is plenty of scope for a lucrative business, and is proceeding to Sydney, en route for Norway, !c-dav to report the result of his .investigations. Captain Hp.slo stales that whaling operations would be commenced at Stewart' Island and tho Chathains; and in couiiectiou therewith a modern GOOO-ton steamer, now employed in the same industry on the African coast, would be commissioned to operate in the waters of tho Dominion. Men practised in tho business would bo brought from Norway, and it was hoped to make a start in November next. Initially tho trying-out will bo done on the steamer, but later a shore station would » established if the catches warranted the expenditure.
