ANOTHER BITTER PIT THEORY.
Dr.- Greig Smith, of Sydney University, described at the last meeting of the Liunean Society his and Br. Cobb's theory as to the origin of "hitter pit" in apples. Jt, had struck him, lie said, that these pits might very well have been caused by tho injection of fluid into the fruit by insects. On examining such insects as the mosquito, it was found that, their piercing apparatus would reach about as d«j) as the centre.of most of thc-se bitter pits. The area of the infected part of the fruit was remarkably sterile. Moreover, these spots grew only io a certain Pize. This fitted in with the injection •theory, for if the 1 disease were produced by a microbe, one would expect the spot to continue, growing Dr. Greig Smith puggesi.ed that _ experiments testing the theory yield valuable results, and remarked that nest season such experi™ts would probably be made, most likely by enclosing trees with mosquito HOi.
