At the'conclusion of their weekly practice at St! Matthew's Mall,-ori Monday night, the members, of the, Harmonic Society held a social-gathering, when the conductor (Mr. E. V. Hudson) on behalf of the members, presented Mr. and' Sirs. Victor E. Roach with a handsome mahogaiiy music cabinet. A larpe satherin? of business men sat down to dinner at the Piccadilly Tea Rooms on Monday evening, in connection •with the Y.M.'C.A. movement. The Mavor (Mr. J. Garnet) occutiied thi chair, and Mr. H. N. Koines (the Wellington secretary) and the Hon. C. M. Luke delivered addresses. It was announced that I a gentleman had offered to contribute •fiiOO towards the .£BOOO required, providing that they were successful in raisin* the balance. Other donors had promised mibrcriptions amounting to .6100 each. . At a. meeting of the Hastings School Committee on 'Monday evening i'- was stated that the two local picture comnanics were providing e. free matineo performance for school children on Coronation Day. OTAKI. . The annual meeting of the local Horticultural Society has twice been called, bur the poor attendance has been responsible for adjournments. Another meeting has now been convened. Writing from Perth, Mr. Alex. Trotter, late of Waikanacy reports having arrived there, accompanied by Mrs. Trotter and family. They are en route to England. 'Confirmation .services will.be held atWaikanae on Friday, when a number of candidates will be presented. A similar service ' will lie held at Qt'aki at a later date. A picture show, which had made arrangemonts to show here weekly, rather • patrons on the opening night by being unable to show, owing to no power being available to work the apparatus. All money was returned. . The annual meeting of the Otaki Bowling Club, called for Monday evening, was only partially finished, when a regrettable incident occurred between two members. A. blow, was struck, but, !before 'others could follow, the two auarrelsome ones were separated. The harmony of the mating was so upset, however, that very little more business was transacted. ; FEILOING. Professor Mills, of Milwaukee, gives a freo lecture here to-morrow night. Tho annual gathering, of the local corps of the Salvation Army was held in the barracks last night, and was addressed by Colonel Birkenshavr, who is in charge of tho operations of tho Army in the North Island." ' There was a large atteiiddance, and the collection yielded fivo guineas.
