THE BOKOUGITS MEAT. The Pctone Borough Council met Inst evening, there Icing present the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), and Councillors R. W. Short, J. Wakeham, C. I'. Brocklebank, G. V. Lodder, W. A letter from tho Department of Agriculture (Live Stock and Meat Division), referring to tho measures taken by tho Council to ensure tliat all meat sold in Petono should bo slaughtered under Government inspection, stated that tlio main object aimed at by the Act would 1m achieved if such measures work satisfactorily, which would bo a big step in advance of previous conditions. It was pointed out, however, that these measures did not relievo the council of its obligation with regard to the provision of an abattoir.—lt was resolved, on the motion of Councillor thata reply be sent acknowledging receipt of the Department's letter, and expressing the hope that an amendment in the Act would bo accomplished before long. The Labour Day Committee of the \\olliivlon Trades and Labour Council asked "for a statement of the terms upon which the council would gram the use of fie Recreation Ground for the Labour Dav' picnic on October 23,—After disons«icn it was agreed that a charge of 1(1 per 'cent., with a maximum of ,fls, befixed for the use of the ground.
