(By Telegraph-Press Association.) Napier, Juno 9. The following are tho nominations for the ivapier Steeplechaso, "to bo run at Napier Parle on Juno 28:—Corazon, Te Arai, Aorangi, Xavier, Mount Cook, Starlight, - Sardonyx, Lull, Lovell, Maidi, AViniata, Loch Fyne, Nogi, Yashmak, Lingerer, El Dorado, Don Carlos. NOTES AND COMMENTS. IBy Glencoe.] During the coming week, there will be no race meetings in the Dominion. The next meeting which will engago the attention of sporting men will be the Hawko's Bay, Jockey Club's winter fixture at Hastings next AYednesday week. , Seeing that El Dorado went wrong prior to the Ellerslie meeting, where Gold Circle failed to show any form, it may noiv be. assumed that the projected trip to Sydney for this pair will be abandoned. Probably Gold Circle will .bo a runner at Hastings on June 21. Corazon is an unlikely starter at the Hawke's'Bay meeting. Neither will he be seen out'at Napier Park. Trainer A r . Collelo lias decided to give Sir AVm. Russell's gelding a short respite from activity, and he may not bo started again until the AVellington. Steeplechase next month. Auckland folk consider Antarctic the best steeplechase horso in the Dominion. The Salvadan gelding was not ready for two such severe races as ho had at Ellerslie, 'and, consequently, it is improbable that ho will be seen out in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. The Native gave a very poor display in his Ellerslie efforts, and must have eorie right off. The black horso is to.be treated to a short spell, and may not run again until the National Hurdles at Riccarton in August. Tho AYanganui horseman, F. Lind, who scored on Pleiades in tho Tamaki Steeples on AYednesday, missed another winning -ride, later in the day, wheii he could not got down to tho weight to rido John, -who won-the Campbell Hurdles. He rapped one or two fences very hard in the Northern On" 1 1 eventuall y to PPled over. On Monday he was never prominent in the Remuera Hurdles. The appeal of 11. Barlow against his disqualification by the Egmonb Club was Mentioned at the-monthly meeting of the Taranaki Metropolitan Club on Tuesday night and it was decided to hold a special meeting next week to review the case.. Barlow-, will ask to be represented by counsel nt the meeting. It is. understood that the AVest Coast horses'.Contendent and King Try 'have been .purchased by Mr. Cunningham, of North Otago. . . Colter displayed capable horsemanship last week, particularly when lie scored in the AVingatui Steeples, find naturally is* now jiiuch'-in the' public eye. So much so is this the case that he has received- several offers of mounts at the National meeting (says'' "Sentinel" in tho "Qtago Witness"). Directoira has been purchased by Mr. Hazlett; of-Southland. The AVairiki filly has been for sale at 250 guineas for somo time past, and that is probably the price at which she changed hands. ' Though. the telegraphed report made no mention of' it, Sol fell again in tho AVintsr Steeplechase. In the Great Northern Steeples, lie was hopelessly beaten •when he fame down at the top of tho hill, but on AYednesday he was' right up with the field)'and within a couple of lengths of Antarctic when disaster overtook him. In connection with the repeated' successes of AYhakaweira of late, it is interesting to note that the Pilgrim's Progress gelding was under firm offer." to '.Mr. 'C. F. Vallance for 5,10 guineas last November, after his victories at Opaki and Taratahi. The AA'airarapa sportsman did not complete the purchase, which must" be considered a lucky thing for his owner—Mr. H. Catherall. Pleiades, the half-brother to Haydn, trained by P. Johnston, finished third in his first race at the recent Ellerslie fixture, and, .011 tlip . second day,, he was running a good race 111 the Great Northern Steeplechase, when he cainc to grief at the stone wall. These facts caused many. of those present to support liini on the last day, and, though lie appeared to be feeling the effects of the first couple of days' racing, he won the Tamaki Steeplechase in an attractive manner. Another racing season ill Auckland having been brought- to a conclusion at E!levslic„ tho situation is now open for full .review, and the totalizator receipts offer an interesting channel for exploration (says the "New Zealand Herald"). During the season the Auckland Racing Club held four meetings, extending over 13 days, and tho sum handled at the totalisatora .in connection therewith amounted to .£209.228. This ■ represents an increase of J!(io,2Soi. ■ compared with the preceding season. Tho magnitude of the figures in tho latter part of the season, which embraces the autumn and winter gatherings, is to be explained by rear son of. tho bookmakers being off tho 6cene. ' ' ' .
