Palmcrston, June 0. Impromptu speeches formed tho main feature of the programme at last night's meeting of tho local Literary and Debating Society, when, notwithstanding the very wet night, there was a very good attendance, and a capital evening's work ensued. The subjects debated were varied, and included such interesting topics as harem skirts and trial by jury. The Philosophical Society intimated its willingness to allow tho society tho uso of the upper room of-lho old lire station for its meetings .is soon as it is properly fixed,up., A.syllabus for future meetings'' was arranged, and, at nest week's ineetI ing, tho subject for debate will be: "That | Dominion Inhibition bo Granted Oil a Baro Majority Voie."
Manawatu Lodgo of Oddfellows met last night, N.G. Bro. W. S. Woodroofo in tho chair. Bro. ,T. Dempsey was tho recipient of the prize for introducing tho largest number of new members during tho year. The N. 6. was appointed to represent the lodgo at Feilding on Wednesday next.
Sixty entries have been riiado for tho two horse-jumping events at tho Winter Show.
A start has been made with the erection of the engineering workshop to bo attached to the Palmerston Technical School. The now building, which will bo in brick, will bo a roomy one, being 52ft. by 25ft. It is hoped lo have tho building ready for occupation by tho beginning of next term. "Hemorrhages" was the 6ubjeot of a lccturo which was to have been given to the members of St. John Ambulance nursing sisters by Dr. Peach last evening, but tho doctor was unfortunately unable tp attend, being detained with a ease, and Mrs. H. Mowlem filled tho gap by calling for "impromptu questions." Thcro was a good attendance of members, and some very instructive work was accomplished. Tho contractor for removing the old iiro station from Coleman Placo to tho Cuba Street frontage has got tho building oil to its new site. As soon as the building has been altered somewhat, the Mens' Free Club and the Philosophical Society wis! take up their quarters there. The latter body has the nucleus of a veryfair museum, but has been handicapped up to tlio present for waiit of room to display the exhibits. In its new abode, thero "will be ample accommodation for this purpose, There was a very large attendance last night at the annual meeting of tho local corps of tho- Salvation Army, and tho Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) presided, tho auiiienco including a number of prominent citizens and several borough conn-' cillors. Colonel Borkinshaw gave a resume of the work of the army generally, and of the local corps in particular. Tho meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding. The monthly meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday, Mr. .T. G. Wilson presiding. The resignation of Mr. E. Essex, Who has gone' on a trip to tho Old Country, was received and accepted. The Health Department wrote,, offering to supply rat poison at cost price; also letters were roc.eivcil from tho Kiwitca and Pohanghia County Councils to the oll'cct that they did not approve of tho suggestion to make the hospital entirely free. Tho Kairanga County Council and tho Halcoinbe Town Board sent in their first instalments of the annual levy. Sister Callaghan was appointed to the permanent; staff. Tho report of tho relieving officer was read and adopted, and a report was also received from the Health Department in regard to a case of scarlot. fever in one of tho outlying districts. Tlie question of purchasing <i site for tho Old Men's Home was held over till a. report was received from the sub-commit-tee appointed to eo into this matter. It was decided to defray the oost of (ho burial of — I,enon, who ditd suddenly at Feilding. It was also resolved to fall in with the wishes of the eommitteo of the All Nations Fair, and devote tho surplus funds raided by that eommitteo to assisting indigent women.
