ROPE AND CORDAGE.

MESSES. BOSS AND SON'S EXHIBIT. [Published hy Akkangement.] A few yards from the theatre door in the Coronation Exhibition stands the striking exhibit of Messrs. William lloss and.Son, ropo and cordage manufacturers, of i'oxton, and one of really genuine local industries, which deserves tho attention of every business man in New Zealand. This firm has an exhibit of all the lines they manufacture, from the largo Manila rope, suitable for ship purposes, to the smallest twines, used in tying up packages. A business new t'o tlie Dominion is the of polisheel twines. Messrs. Ross and Son hud the misfortune to have the factory burned down some eighteen months ago, but they at once set' about' to get the latest improved machinery for the manufacture of bath ropes, lashings, and shop twines. They decided that in rebuilding they would separate their works into two parts, one factory entirely for tho manufacture of rope?, lashing, and Under twine, and the other for the manufacture of all kinds of polished twines and plough-line?, also seaming twines. Their shop twines arc of a high class qualirj, a«i is shown by the fact that' when the firm had to make a complaint over a matter connected with the Customs the reply sent to the firm from the Trade and Customs Department was as loll0"The twines made by you appear to be of better quality and to have a much higher breaking strain than imported twines. The finish of imported, twines is very good, but a .close inspection ot tlie raw material, of which they are made, may reveal other reasons why they are sold so cheaply. (Signed) Montgomery, Secretary of Customs. This report, coming from the uistoms Department, seems to speak for itselt, as to the quality of Messrs. Ross and Son » shop twines. On examining their rones, etc., at their stand at the Exhibition, one can see the perfect make of the different articles. The firm shows at their stand a sample of all the different hemps for the manufacture of ropes and twines, viz., New Zealand hemp, Manila, .V 1 Russian, and Italian hemps and sisal. It is an exhibit that is most educame and interesting.

An interesting exhibit likely to be passed by on account of its diminutive ii'a." is to be seen at Mr. Harry Mayer s stall (at. tho foot of the stairs leading to the home industries ar.d schools gallery). This is a threepenny pieoe. ; on which Mr. Mayor has engraved "The lord's Prayer," -not once, but Ihreo times. The inscrin.ion is in square blcak-tvpe letter-, nerfeet in formation. They cannot be read with the naked eve. but a inagiiifyn>g-gla c s is chained to tho counter to enable this wonderful bit of .work to be deciphered,
