BRIDGE DAMAGED.
SUPPOSED MALICIOUS ACT.
Dynamite, or gelignite, it is suggested, has been used by somo malicious person on the new jarrah bridge over the South Karori Stream—completed as lecently as March last—and with the object of obtaining such information as will discover the identity of the miscreant, the Makara County Council has offered a,reward of .£2O. The matter was reported to the council _ at its meeting yesterday, when the chairman (Mr. G. Monk) roported that oil Sunday last ho noticed that one wing of the now bridge had been shifted bodily out of its position, one of the ties was broken, and tho cap lifted off the top of the pile. Tho general aspect of the damage, he added, suggested that an. explosive had been used—there could be.no other way of accounting for the state of the bridge. One' of the councillors hinted darkly at some "nastiness in tho district." '
Another speaker asserted that on the occasion of the opening of. til© bridge some person was heard to remark that tho structure would not last very long. Tho general opinion of the meeting was that a malicious act had been committed, and it was decided, 011 the motion of Councillor F. T. Moore, that a reward of .£2O should be offered for the information which would lead to the discovery of the offender. It was also decided to report tho matter to the police.
