On the first' of the present month the Shipping and Seamen's Amendment Act came into force rendering it necessary for every British foreign-going ship of not less than a thousand tons gross tonnage going to sea from any place in New Zealand to bo provided with a duly certificated cook who is able to prove one month's service at sen in some capacity,

It is not at' present proposed by the Department to conduct examinations and issue certificates in cooking, but' to recognise as valid for the purposes of the Act certificates in cooking granted by tho technical schools under the control of the Education Department' or education boards in the Dominion. Cooks desiring to obtain such a certificate should therefore make the necessary application to tha directors of such schools,
