AUSTRALIAN ITEMS. At tho Gaiety, Sydney, last Tuesday night, "Billy" Elliott, ex-feather-weight champion of Australia, and "Sailor" Carpenter, of H.M.S. Powerful, mit in a-20-rounds contest. Each of tho pair weighed under ,9st. The pace was willing all through, and although tho sailor succeeded in scoring every now and again with heavy lights, Elliott butboxed him from the eighth round up to the finish, which, occurred in the 14th, when a succession of'right and left swings caused Carpenter to drop his arms in an attempt to stop the blows, and Elliott, taking advantage of the opportunity, secured victory, tlio towel coming in from Carpenter's corner. At Adelaide, on May 29, tho New Zcalander, "G'us" Devitt fought, Bungardy for the middle-weight championship of South Australia. It was the best contest seen there for a considerable time, Referee Perriman gave' tho - verdict to ■ Devitt after twenty rounds. A draw would have been a better decision (says the "Referee's" correspondent). The ring was siippory owing to a heavy -dew.
