HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
(Fi'oni Our Srccial Correspondent.) The funeral of the late Jfrs. Stevens, which took place at Lower Hult yesterday, was one of the largest ever seen in the district. Many floral tributes and messages of condolence were received from all parts of the Dominion. The contract for the new premises of the Union Clothing Company,- which is to be erected on the corner of Jackson and Richmond Street's, and which involves a sum of about ,£3OOO, has been let to a Wellington firm.
Up to date tho canvass for a cottage hospital for Potone has yielded .£7l 6s. 9d. This amount (says Mrs. R. W. Short, secretary of the canvassing committee) includes J221 which has been held by the local Borough Council. The canvass is proceeding. Under the auspices of the Heretaunga Boating Club, a very successful "social" was held at the Petone Drill Hall last evening. There were about' _50 couples present, and dancing was interspersed with musical items.
