A deputation of residents from Terrace End waited on tho Borough Council at its meeting last night, and requested that tho Government Coronation subsidy should be devoted to the orcction of a public hall at that end of the town. The deputation pointed out that that portion of the town was becoming very populous, and the want of n public hall was greatly iclt. After discussion, tho Mayor moved that the request of the deputation V acceded to. This was carried and a subcommittee, consisting of tho Mayor and Councillors Haydon and Armstrong, was set up to secure plans and olltuin an estimate of cost.

Arbor Day. which was to have been observed to-day by the Borough Council and Beautifying Society, has been postponed till next Wednesday, on account of the death of Mrs. Jickoll, wifo of the borough engineer. At the monthly meeting of St. John Ambulance Association Nursing Guild, Nurse Lonergan reported that she had paid 10G visits to patients during the month. One ' >ccn removed to the Hospital. It is proposed to accord his Excellency the Governor a civic welcome on tho occasion of his visit to Palmerston North on Juno 19 to open tho winter show. Fire-Inspector Hugo has sent a report to tho Borough Council suggesting that the newly-erected hall on the showgrounds should be connected with the Cuba Street water service by a onc-iuch pipe, and that a quantity of hose be' provided '£ the hall, which (between the shows) is used as a skating rinlc. The inspector thinks it regrettable, considering tho number and value of the buildings on tho showgrounds, that the association cannot see its way to lay a four-inch main through the ground, and -connect all tho buddings. At the meeting of the Borough Council last night a motion of condolence was passed to the borough engineer and his t'amiiv regarding the bereawmmt they have sustained through the death of Mrs. Jickoll.

A lecturc on the alpine flora of New Zealand, given by Mr. Justice Chapman last night in the Municipal Hall, under the auspices of the Manaw.atu Philoso.pnical Society, proved very interesting. The president of the society, Mr. \\. I. Durwartl, occupicd the chair, and at the conclusion of his address, the lecturcr was accorded a vote of thanks.

A special meeting of the Borough Council will lie held shortly to discuss the question of a 1 new library, swimming bath, and the installation of electric trams.

The Borough Council has decided to ask the local police force to do its utmost to put a stop to motorists driving through the streets at a furious pace, and also driving round street corners at a pace dangerous to public safety. The attention of the manager of the Opera House and the fire superintendent is also to bo called to overcrowding at tho Opera House. The latter decision was brought about by the overcrowding .it the recent performance of "The Whip," when chairs were placed in the aisles, and people were also allowed to stand at the lw.ck of the dress circle.

At its meeting last night the Borough Council set up a committee to ga into tho matter of taking over the works from the Palmerston Gas Company.

Tho inspector of the Fire Board reported that he had inspected the exits at the school, and had found them inadequate in case of emergency. He suggested that several doors should be re-hung and made to open outwards.

A narrow escape from serious accident happened in Main Street East one evening this week to a party of motorists from Pahiatun. Tlie street was .very greasy, and tho. water-table rather sharp, with tho result that the car.skidded and ran into the footpath, striking a verandali-post. The post was smashed, and tho car wa9 somewhat damaged, but, fortunately, tho occupants escaped without injury.
