HORSEWHIPPING INCIDENT.

--- 111 ■■ —* A WAKKWOBTH SENSATION. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.! Auckland, June 7. Last week a.lady who resides in Warkworth horsewhipped a storekeeper resident in that township. Her husband (Dr. J. Hewins) now ■ writes to tho "Herald" as follows:— ' "On the evening of June 1 I was informed that certain statements .had been mado.by a local'shopkeeper, about my wife. I went homo, and telling her what I had heard, asked her what she wished mo to do. She asked me (as I expected) to allow her to horsewhip him. I agreed, and in tho morning we went together to the store of Mr. Geo. Guest and bought a suitable whip, and then told hint what we intended doing with it. Ho strongly dissuaded us from our project, and at; last said: 'Well, doctor, will you come with me while your wife waits here, and wo wfll ask tho man if lie really said these things?' I agreed, and further promised Mr. Guest that I would not myself lay violent hands on the man in his presence. Wo proceeded to the shop, and Mr. Guest asked him plainly, 'Did you say so-and-so (repeating tho supposed statements) about Mrs. Hewins?' The answer was 'Yes, I did.' We went back to Mr. Guest's shop, and then, calling several witnesses to follow us, my wife and I went to the shop, and she administered the predetermined punishment. I then addressed the crowd, repeating at my wife's request the allegations that hail caused her to take so extreme a step. They will now form the basis of proceedings by proper process of law, and I encloso a copy of the statements as made, so that you may judge for yourself whether my wife's a.ction was ixcusable or not.''
