HASTINGS.

On Monday night an endeavour was made to arrange a suitable celebration of the Coronation year.. A public meeting, convened by tho Mayor, was attended by about thirty persons. Each appeared to have a schema of his own, and these ranged from the erection of a municipal theatre to the construction of a two-mile boulevard from Hastings to Havelock. Ultimately it was dtcided to erect; a drinking fountain in Cornwall Park. The Coronation Bay festivities will be chiefly marked by two processions—one by day and tho other under torchlight at night.

On Tuesday morning Messrs. D. O'Reilly and G. Ebbett left for Wellington, where, with Mr. X R. Rivers, they will act as a deputation to the Minister for Railways to again urge upon him tho necessity for opening up the Eastbourne Street railway crossing. On the same occasion Mr. Dillon, M.P., is to present a resolution, passed at a recent public meeting, urging. the claims of Hastings as tho most suitable site, far the railway workshops in Hawke's Bay.

Arrangements are in hand for the annual children's ball, in support of the Hospital Fund. A meeting of ladies has decided that it shall be held next month, and a committee has been, set up to supervise details.
