PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.! Palmerston, Jiirie" 6.'- ,- An okl,settler of Himilangi, Jlr. Yanko/ met with a scvej-a accident on Saturday. He was driving in a buggy with his wife and another lady, Mrs. Lucinsky, when tho horse bolted. Tho vehicle was capsized, and Jir. Yanko was badly injured, the medical examination showing that livo of the ribs had been broken. Thp patient is between 70 and.SO years of age. Ho is, however, progressing as well as possible. JlrS. Yanko was badly shaken, but Jlrs. Lucinsky escaped unhurt. Jlr. Maurice Jlillar, of Palmerston, happened to be passing in , his motor-car at tho time, and drove tho injured couple to their home. Jlrs. S. Jickell, wife of the borough engineer, died this morning, after a protracted and painful illness.. Though tho demise was not unexpected the end came as a gr v at shock, and much sympathy is felt for Mr. Jickell and family. The lato Jlrs. Jickell was greatly esteemed by .1(1 who knew her, teing a. woman of sympathetic temperament. The deceased iarty was SO years of age. The general committee of the JTar.awatu A. and P. Association held a special meeting to-day to rake steps to till the vacant secretaryship of the association caused by the resignation of Jlr. J. C. Larie. It was decided to advertise for applications for the position at a salary of '.£3OO per annum.
.Jlr. W. I. Lovelock, the well-known Holstein cattlo trader, of Palmerston, left to-day on his way to America, where ho has been commissioned, to secure stock of this breed for a number of breeders here.
There was a large gathering of Terrace End residents at St. Peter's Sunday Schoolroom last night, to discuss matters in connection-with tho welfare-of that end of the town. The mayor (Jlr. J. A. Nash) presided, and stated that ho was there merely in his official capacity, though, of course, ho would be only too pleased to do anything that he could to promote any portion of the town. While in Wellington recently he had waited on the Hon. Mv Buddo, in respect to securing a portion of the Government reserve at Terrace End as a recreation ground, but the Jlinister had advised him to send a deputation to the Government later, and interview the Premier. Ho also detailed the steps which the Borough Council was taking to push the town ahead. After some discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. R. Gardner, that a petition be circulated, asking the Government to sot aside ten acres of the reserve at Terrace End for a recreation ground. It was also decided to ask the Borough Council to erect a town hall at Terrace End. with the Coronation sub-, sidy. A strongly-worded motion was passed," condemning the Railway Department for' refusing to linht the Terrace End railway station. Jlessrs. R. Gardner, H. Nash, and R. Edwards were appointed to wait, on the borough council on tho.nups.tion of erecting a hall at Terrace End. The question of trams wa.-; touched upon, but no action was taken.
The Central Auxiliary of the Baptist Union of New Zealand was held here yesterday afternoon, when a number of encouraging reports from various churches in the union were read. The following officers were appointed-.—President. JTr. C. Cathie,-Wellington; vice-president, Jlr. G. H. Maunder, New Plymouth; secretary, Jlr. D. R. Purdy, Wellington. A general committee of ten was elected, representing the different churches in the union. A largely-attended meeting, was held in the evening, when a number of interesting addresses were given.
