JURYMEN'S OBLIGATIONS.
CAN'T DISCHAUGE THEMSELVES.
The fine which was inflicted on Joseph Mandel for failing to appear when summoned as a juryman was remit led yesterdav on further explanation being oiler-

Uothenbcrg, v;ho appeared for the absentee, said be could assure tho Court, from his own persona knowledge, that Mr. Mandel hud been ill m bed for the last three or four weeks Untortun--itolv he did not understand the true procedure, and had supposed that the medical .certificate which he sent io the Jiogistrar would be sulhcient to excuse "ill- Justice Sim said that if a certificate 'could lx> accepted in such oircumstances it would mean that jurymen, instead of being discharged by the Court, could discharge themselves. A man who did not want to attend might get a doctor to give him a certincnU, and simply £ Counsel said his client acted in pure IR IIiV Honour: It is just: as well that it should be understood that jurymen cannot discharge themselves. It is necossarv for someone ,to come and give evidence on oath. However, you say that, in your own personal knowledge, this man has been ill in bed for some lime. Under the circumstances the fine will be remitted.
