Politicians paid too much attention to potty legislation- It seemed to him- that the small things were discussed and threshed out while such matters as defence, for instance, were not discussed as they ought to be. It iras tho tendency with people to concern themselves w-.tli their own small daily affairs, and not concern themselves with such a probk-i as defence. When tho cold blasts ot trouble camp, people would then fully realise their strength and their weakness., lie approved of lord Kitchener's scheme ol defence, provided it were kept entirely frco from political interference. In reference lo our population, he would lik* ; to seo it larger. In comparison wnn' other countries, we had not increased as we ought to have done. Towards the end of tho meeting, the resolution was brought forward and carried: "That the women's branch of the Reform League desires to place on record its protest against the amendment of the Judicature Act Inst session, winch, owing to no provision being made to exempt actions in conrsa of hearing, deprived the plaintiffs in an action then before the Court (Rose nnd Macdonald) of the full redress which tho law provided when the action was commenced; and tlwt it desires', further, to extend its sympathy to tho women (plaintiffs in said action) in this improper interference by the legislature with litigation so vitally affecting' their interests. It further desire's to enter its protest against tho independence of tho judiciary—the final bulwark of citizens air.riut injustice and oppression—being endangered through special payments being made by the Govern--ment to Judges for particular sprvicas."
