It is considered practically certain that (he efforts being made to provide public swimming baths here as a Coronation memorial will be successful. The estimated cost, including land,, is about ,£3OO. Already donations amounting to about iEIOO have been promised, and Mr. H. F Toogood, consulting engineer to the Hokitika Harbour Board, has promised to prepare the plans free of cost. At the meeting of the debating society on Friday evening, impromptu speeches were given by members on subjects named by them, and allotted bv ballot. Some of the subjects were "'Wealth," "Imperialism," "Home Life, "Town v. Country Life," and "Babies. , They were dealt with by the respective speakers in an interesting manner. A deputation from the Mount Hector Tourists Track Committee will wait on the Fcatherston County Council on Friday to protest against the- intention of 'Hie latter body to ask the Land Board 'jor permission to vary the expenditure of "thirds' amounting to ,£7O, so as to make a road to Mr.H. Hart's property. It was originally decided by the council lo expend the 'money, together with a fiovernment grnni' of -CIOO, on the Mount Ifeclor track.
