HOME RULE FINANCE.
ME. EEDMOND'S ATTITUDE. By TelesraDh—Press Association-Ooiiyrlriu London, Juno 4. It is hinted in some political circles that unlessvthe Government meet Mr. > John Redmond's.views regarding a money \ grant for the financing of Homo Rule, [ the Nationalists • will vote against the > Government on the Payment of Members J Bill. 1 A letter from Mr. J. E. Redmond was j recently published in Dublin, in which he stated that he wished to dissociate j himself beforehand from the findiugs of J tho committee appointed by the Govern--3 ment to inquire into the financial rela- -, tions of Ireland and tho rest of the Unit- > ed Kingdom. In an interview published a at the end of March in the "Daily Mail," B Mr. Redmond said:—"As to financial . questions, I prefer , -at this stage to make ! no statement beyond this: Tho. suggesj tion that a financial settlement just to ;. both countries is a really serious diffi- , culty in one way is, in my opinion, totalI ly untrue. On the contrary, lam con- . vine'ed that it will be found when the y matter is investigated that the argument '• founded on finance is the strongest of f nil in favour of Homo Rule, and from i the British standpoint quite as much as - from the Irish." A Government return was issued in i September last to show the proportions f of revenue paid by England, Scotland, ! and Ireland, and the proportions of the benefits received in public grants, pays menta of Civil servants, law charges, olds ago pensions, and other items of local ex--0 pendituro: t Received 0 ' Contributed for Local Revenue. Exp'nd'turo. ! England ... 105,97-1,500 40,136,000 Scotland ... 14,138,000 7,450.500 Ireland 8,355,000 10,712,500 1 It will bo seen that Ireland makes a >' "profit" of ,£2,357,500 out of the trans- • action, while England and Scotland "lose" > .£56,833,500 and «Cfi,G87,500. Ireland's large share of old-age pensions ' in 1909 is responsible for much of her 0 advantage. She received more than one- ' fourth of • tho total cost of pensions, or r X 2.-143.000 of .£8,4110,000. England had II only ,£5,564,000 and Scotland X 954.000. e
