(Before Mr. \V. G. Riddel, S.M.) VON ENDEN AND A CONFRERE. WHAT THE I'OLICK MADE OF IT. Carl Ven Enden and Francis Fisher, two seamen from ths steamer Drayton Grange, were charged on remand (1) with having used threatening behaviour in the bar of the Terminus Hotel; (i) with having made use of improper language; (3) with having assaulted Constr.blo Sluiw. \'on Endsu was sei::irntely ehiirged with having assaulted Detective Hammond, and with having damaged a pair ot trousers, valued at 22.-=. fid., the property of Constable Shaiy. Fisher was further charged with having assaulted Fredericlc Ij. Backhouse, aiirl with liavinj; damaged a;suit of clothos valued at .to os. Si!. Fisher pleaded guilty to tin; charges against him; .and Yon EiuJoii to against him, with the. exception of that of damaging itlic cousf.ible's trousers. According to the evidence of Sub-Insnsc-tor Sheehan, tho tv.-o accused, on Saturday, May 27, created a disturbanoo in the bar of tho Terminus Hotel, and were turned out. Constable Shaw arrested Von Enden, who resisted violently, and . assistance was obtains;! to take him to the police station. The language complained of was used on the way. On the first charge each accused was fined 40s. or seven days' imprisonment; on tho second £3, or 21 days' imprisonment; and on the third, 21 days' imprisonment. For assaulting Detective Hammond, Von Endcn was sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment, arid for having damaged ths trousers, Was ordered to pay 225. Gil. or • go to gaol for seveu days. For assaulting Backhouse, Fisher was sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment, and, for damaging the suit of clothes, was ordered to pay its value, £a ss. 6d., in default one month's imprisonment. SUNDRY DRINK CASES. Kato Wilson, aliss Bethune, with a long lirt of previous convictions against her, pleaded guilty to drunkenness, but not guilty to having committed a breach of a prohibition order. She was convicted, and, on the first charge, committed to the Pakatoa Inebriates' Home for one year. On the second chargo she was convicted and discharged. For drunkenness John Hyde was fined 20s. (in default seven days' imprisonment). William Brady pleaded guilty to drunkenness, and committing a brracli of a prohibition order. For the first offence he was sentenced to one month's imprisonment; and was convicted and discharged on the second. Charles Henry Eushton admitted having committed disorderly conduct while drunk. Sub-Inspector 'Sheehan stated that on Saturday morning last, in The Jjomimos Avenue, tho accused, takin" his coat off, wanted to fight Accu:-r-l was fined 20s. (in default seven days imprisonment). CASES REMANDED. Henry James Mathewson was charged with having, on December 2, at Wellington, received 10s. Sd. on terms requiring him to account for the money to Ernest L Burns. Having failed to so account for the money, a charge of theft was preferred against the accused. A remand was granted till June 6, and, on the application of Mr. H. F. O'Leary, bail was used at ,£lO, with one surely of .£lO. "William O'Brien was charged with having, on or about June 2, stolen two gold rings, three brooches, a silver watch, "and a gold chain', of a total value of ~£!), from the dwellinghouse of Agnes Mer- . cer, Wellington. Accused, on the application of Sub-Inspector Sheehan, was remanded till Juno 12.. CONSTABLE ASSAULTED. Michael O'Brien admitted having assaulted Constable Dunbar, and was fined £3 or seven days' imprisonment. -. MAINTENANCE CASES. For disobedience of a maintenance order, Catherine M'Donald Burton, who did not appear, was fined Ms., or It days' imprisonment. Alfred John Lacey, who was .£sl 15s. in arrears in respect to a maintenance order, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. The application of Harold Enoch Spencer, for rehearing of on order to pay fis. a week for the maintenance of a child . was refused. His AVorship pointed out that, four years ago, the applicant had said that the child was his, and now he swore that it was not. The whole application was full of uncertainty. Mr. A. Dunn appeared for Spencer. Spencer was then charged with disobeying the maintenance order, the total arrears amounting to M 6. He was fined 10s., and, in default, to undergo 14 days' imprisonment. SEPARATION ASKED. Caroline Ford applied for a separation order from her husband, James Edwin Ford, also for the guardianship of their children, and maintenance. Mr. W. Berry appeared for tho applicant. The latter who was unable to speak above a whisper, said that her husband had kicked her on or.p occasion, and she consequently had to become an outpatient of the Wellington Hospital. She admitted that, sometimes, she had retaliated when illtreated. Tha respondent admitted getting drunk occasionally, but stated that his wife also took more liquor than was good for her. His AVorship dismissed the information on tho ground that the evidence was insufficient to disclose persistent cruelty. A AA'IFE'S REQUEST. Mary Ann Fop_e (of AVellinglon) proceeded against William Pope (her husband) for failing to support her. Mr. Arnold appaaml for plaintiff, and Mr. P. Jackson for the defendant. For the defence it was set forth that failure to earn tho money was responsible for the non-payment of the maintenance sums, and his AVorship dismissed the case, it being understood that the charge could 1:? renewed later if tho defendant's financial affairs improved.
