NEW DEFENCE SCHEME.

HEGISTKATION AT CHRISTCHURCII,

It being supposed that yesterday was the last day for registration under the now defence scheme (says tho Christchurch "Press" of Saturday) no fewer than 300 names were added to the list tor Greater Christchurch. As has been tho case all along, however, many of tho forms were inaccurately or incompletely tilled in, and will have to be returned to the sanders for additional information. Lieutenant Finnis, who is in charge of the areas comprising the Greater Christchurch group, estimates that altogether close on 4000 have registered in tho district. It is impossible, until further details of the recent census are available, to form any idea of how many who are eligible for registration liavo failed to register, but it is estimated that they aro decidedly numerous. What tho Department anticipates doing in regard to enforcing tho penalty provided for by the regulations has not yet transpired, but the feeling in Territorial circles is that unless an example is mado of somo of tho delinquents they will fail to treat tho provision for compulsory registration seriously. A number have refused.to onrol on conscientious grounds, and it will be interesting (the "Press" concludes) to see how far their consciences will carry them in their defiance of the law.
