VALUE OF AN AEROPLANE.
A CUSTOMS PROSECUTION. By Tcleeraph-Press Associatlon-Oopyrisbt Melbourne, Juno 2. John Pithcr, an engineer, was fined ,£lO for evading payment of duty on machinery valued at .£SOO, imported. from New Zealand in November last. Pithcr brought over an aeroplane to offer to tho Commonwealth Government. Its value was stated at ,£l3 ss. on tho packages. They were passed by tho Customs, but afterwards Pithcrs was examined in bankruptcy, and he then swore that the goods that had been brought over wero valued at least at ,£2OO. Tho defence staited the Government had seized tho aeroplane for non-payment of duty. Tho magistrate, in imposing a fine, said he did not think there had been any attempt to defraud the Department.
