PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
iFrom Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, June 2. The Palmerston Orchestral Society gave the first concert of its sixteenth season at the Opera House last night, when there was a very large audience, which, judging from the enthusiastic applause and tho number of encores, thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. Ever since- its inception, Mr. Maurice Cohen has occupied the position of conductor, and, under his guidance, the society has been built'up. The society now attacks music of a very high standard, and interprets it very well indeed. The society, in fact, has becomo an institution of the town, and its concerts are looked forward to with pleasurable anticipation. Last night's performance was among the best which the society has given. Quito a number of the selections had to be repeated, so much did they meet tho taste of. the largo audience present. Included in tho numbers were two which had been chosen for the society by Mr. Louis Cohen, brother of tho conductor, on a recent visit to England. Tho society is generally discriminating in its selection of vocalists at its concerts, and last night it was fortunate in securing tho„ services of Miss M'lndoe, of Wellington, and Mr. Uraper. Miss M'lndoe had previously appeared before a Palmerston audience, and she had to respond to double encores. Mr. Couper also had to respond to encores, and Mr. Y E. Johnstone, 'cellist, of Wellington, was as successful in pleasing tho audience, and he, too, had to give additional numbers. The • College Street School Committee met last night, Mr. T. R. Hodder (chairman) presiding. The Fire Board wrote stating that five additional exits were required at tho school for the satety of tno children, and the matter was referred to the Education Board. The headmaster reported that the roll number was 190, with an average attendance of 450. It was left to tho chairman to mako arrangements in connection with tho celebration of Coronation Day. Tho secrotary reported; thai ths desks promised by the Education Board ten months ago had not yet come to hand. Mr. J. B. Gorraud and the Rev. A. Doull were appointed delegates to tho proposed conference of school committees. A meeting of representatives of tho local bodies in the Palmerston hospital district is to be held on June 8, to take into consideration the proposal to 4 establish a children's ward at tho hospital. Up till last night, twelve hundred military registrations had been received. At a meeting of the Mauawatu Land Drainage Board yesterday, tho finances were gone into. The balance-sheet showed that: the whole of tho rates, with the exception of 12s. 5d., had been collected, and a hearty vote of thanks ivns accorded to tho secretary (Mr. W. Rutherfurd) for this vcrv satisfactory state of affairs. All Saints' cadets met last night, and it was shown that the strength of the corps was now sixty. Lieutenant Robinson addressed the boys, and gave them a lot of useful information. Ho also gave somo instruction in semaphore signalling. The Palmerston Hospital statistics for tho month of May aro ns follow:—Patients in tho hospital at the beginning of tho month, 50; admitted during the month, SG; discharged. 68; died, 3; at present in tho hospital, .15.
