In preaching at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, on the occasion of tke Tercentenary of the Authorised Version last week, Canon Driver, after warmly recognising the undoubted merits of the Version, warned his hearers that, while they might admire and revere, thoy must not idolise it, or make even a Version of the Bible a fetish. The Authorised Version, translated three hundred years since, was not adequate either to the scholarship or tho needs of the present day. Tho two main causes of this were the change in our language, which rendered much of the Authorised Version unintelligible and even misleading; and tho fact that that Version was now inadequate on account of tho progress of knowledge. Hebrew and Greek were now better understood than formerly, and discovery and research had also thrown much light upon what was previously obscure. Tho Authorised Version also failed to make clear wholo passages which can now bo read as consecutive argument or narrative. Tho original translators, were they alive, would bo the first to do this themselves. It was stated during tho hearing of a housebreaking charge at tho Middlesex session* that a house was entered whilo a companion of tho thief worked a street organ outside.
