Ho tried in vain to get the pipe clear, and, faced with the prospect of suffocation under water, ho cut tho pine, though he was 57ft. below the -urface, since not only was his supply of air stopped, but the jamming Df the air-tube prevented free movement. Then he pulled the life-line, and Was hauled' to the. surface in an exhausted state. Before now divers have cut their air-pipes at a considerable distance below the surface, but never, it is stated, at so great a depth as this-
