EVICTED.
GOVERNOR-GENERAL TO SHIFT VICE-REGAL RESIDENCE AS A MUSEUM. LABOUR CABINET'S ACTION. By Telegraph—Press AESociation-Cojpyrieht (Rec. June 1, 11.5 p.m.) Sydney, June 1. The Stale Government at the end of tho present term, which expires this month, has decided to resume possession of Government J louse, Sydney. This building, which is (he finest viceregal residence in Australia, for the past ten years has been lent to the Federal Government as a residence for tho Gov-ernor-General. One of tho reasons for the Btep now proposed is that tho magnificent buildiug and grounds are used only for a short period in each year, but the chief factor in tho decision was the necessity of finding room for many thousands of books belonging to tho public libraries, which have at present to 1)0 stowed in such a manner as to be inaccessible to readers. It is proposed to transform the viceregal residence into a National Museum of natural history, arts, etc., while tho grounds will bo converted into public gardens. It is also proposed, when the building for tho famous Mitchell library of Australian literature recently bequeathed to the Stato is completed, to demolish tho prosent public library and the Government Printing Office, and to erect large buildings for pnblic Departments on tho site occupied by them. The decision to rcsumo Government House came as a surprise to the Federal Government. It means making other provision for housing the GovernorGeneral in Sydney, and Mr. Hughes, the Acting-Prime Minister, will confer with he State Government to-morrow with regard to tho matter.
