MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Corrcsi,ondcnt.) Masterton, June 1. Although no arrangements have yet been made for Ihe celebration ot Coronation Day in Mastcrion, it is probable thar the matter wjll be discussed at the mooting of the Borough Council on Tuesduv next, and thai the public will be nlloriled an opportunity ct holding a demonstration on Ihe day in question, should it lecl so disposed. Soutn African ex-trooper* have intimated their intention of parading on the day in question. An interesting rillc match is to bs ftved at Mauricevillu on Saturday next, between teams representing the Opaki Club and tho combined Bush Clubs. A seven-aside football tournament in connection with the Wairarapa Friendly Societies is to be played on the old showgrounds in Mastcrlon on Saturday next.
A combined school excursion to Wellington is mentioned. It is suggested that, as the rohooU will be closed for a fortnight from June ID, an opportunity should be given the children of witnessing the Coronation festivities, as well as the Industrial Exhibition in the city, and that the excursion might be extended over a couple of days l . The total rainfall registered in Masterton for the month ot May was 2.74 in. Rain fell on twelve days during the month.
The Wairarapa Swimming Club held a social gathering at the Exchange Hall tonight, when the prizes won (luring tho year were presented. Mr. F. A. Jacobsen, apiary instructor to the Agricultural Department, lias been on a visit of inspection to the bee farms in this district. He has imparted some valuable information to those engaged in the industry. Masterton at present boasts of the most extensive bee farm in the Dominion.
At a meeting of the AVairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday, the salaries for nurses and probationers at the various institutions under the control of the board were fixed as, follow:—Matrons: Masterton, ,£125; Pnhiatua, ,£100; South Wairarapa, .£IOO. Sisters: Jcbb to X7O. Probationers: First year J2O. second year £25, third year ■JC3S.
The Masterton Parliamentary Debating Society opened its winter session last evening with a debate on tho subject of New Zealand's defence scheme. Mr.. J. C. Cooper led the debate in support of the system, and Mr. W. Kemp took the negative. After an interesting debate, a vote was taken, which favoured tho negative.
The Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board has adopted the recommendation of its Finance Committee, and has decided to take over the administration of the Masterton ambulance brougham.
There was .\ very light sitting of [he Magistrate's Court in civil jurisdiction this morning. At the criminal sitting to-morrow -several by-law 'ca-sos will be dealt with, and iv charge under tho Licensing Act will be investigated. At a meeting' of the Carlton Cricket Club last night if was decided to bold the annual "social" at the Drill Hall on Thursday,' July 20.
The employees on one of the East Coast stations have formed themselves into a social club. Some months ago they acquired a billiard-table, and, with the profits from this, they have now purchased <i gramaphonc, and intend petting up a library-
Informations have been laid against sev. eral settlers- in the Wairarapa district for failing to destroy rabbits on their properties. A run in connection with the \\oirarana Hunt was held at Clareville this afternoon. Tho weather was delightful, and a considerable number of sports followed tlic bounds.
The Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board has decided that, in future, no tickets for free admission to the institutions under it? control shall bo issued. Hitherto it. has been the practice to issue tickets through friendly societies in certain districts. "Swr?t Lavender" is lo be nrodured in Masterton bv amateurs on .Tune 23. in aid of the St. John Ambulance. Several nrnmineiit members of the Wellington "Mountebanks" are assisting.
